Characteristics of Fiberglass Storage Tanks
Fiberglass storage tanks are one of the most widely used products among resin-based composite materials. Compared with traditional metal and reinforced concrete storage tanks, they have the following characteristics.
(1) Good corrosion resistance: Because the corrosion resistance of fiberglass storage tanks can be designed according to the operating conditions, it can meet the requirements of different corrosive media.
(2) High strength, light weight: Due to the high specific strength of fiberglass materials, the tanks manufactured with it are 1/3 lighter than steel tanks and reinforced concrete tanks of the same volume.
(3) Good heat insulation and thermal insulation effect: Because the thermal conductivity of fiberglass is only 1/100 and 1/10 of that of metal and reinforced concrete, it can save energy when used as chemical equipment.
(4) Easy molding: Fiberglass storage tanks can be manually molded or mechanically wound; the size can be as small as 1m³ and as large as 1500m³.
(5) Convenient maintenance: Fiberglass storage tanks can be repaired on-site under natural conditions. Very convenient.
(6) Convenient installation and transportation: Due to the light weight and good integrity of fiberglass storage tanks, they are generally prefabricated in the factory and then transported to the site for installation. Large-scale storage tanks can also be assembled or manufactured on-site.
(7) Good durability: The service life of fiberglass storage tanks is more than 0.5 times longer than that of metal and concrete storage tanks after corrosion treatment.
Classification of Fiberglass Storage Tanks
There are many types of fiberglass storage tanks:
(1) Classification by use
Liquid storage tanks store various oils, water, and various corrosive media.
Solid storage tanks store various powdery and granular solid substances, such as cement, fertilizers, feed, and grains.
Gas storage tanks store various gases, such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and coal gas.
(2) Classification by operating status
Underground storage tanks, such as underground oil tanks.
Aboveground storage tanks: This is the most commonly used fiberglass storage tank.
Semi-underground storage tanks: This is a combination of the above two types of storage tanks.
Water storage tanks, such as offshore and river storage tanks.
Underwater storage tanks: This type of storage tank is installed underwater, does not occupy land, is not affected by wind and waves, and is less affected by temperature. Safe to use.
Aerospace storage tanks, such as rocket fuel storage tanks and various containers used on airplanes.
(3) Classification by operating pressure
Atmospheric storage tanks: Tanks that only withstand the self-weight pressure of the liquid.
Pressure storage tanks: Tanks that have other pressures in addition to self-weight, such as coal gas tanks, automobile natural gas cylinders, and oxygen cylinders.
(4) Classification by shape
Cylindrical storage tanks are divided into vertical and horizontal types, which are common storage tank forms.
Rectangular storage tanks are used when the environment limits the rectangular space, such as rectangular water tanks, rectangular feed silos, and grain silos.
Spherical storage tanks: Considering the stress state and effective volume, this form is the best.
(5) Classification by molding method: According to the molding method of the storage tank, it can be divided into hand lay-up molding, winding molding, and spraying molding.
Applications of Fiberglass Storage Tanks
Due to the characteristics of corrosion resistance, light weight, high strength, easy manufacturing, and low transportation and installation costs, fiberglass storage tanks have been widely used in the chemical, petroleum, papermaking, pharmaceutical, food, metallurgical, grain, and feed industries.
(1) Fiberglass chemical storage tanks: Fiberglass storage tanks used to store acids, alkalis, salts, and various chemical solvents are currently the main products with the longest application history and the largest usage.
(2) Fiberglass underground oil tanks: Mainly used to replace steel oil tanks at gas stations.
(3) Fiberglass transport storage tanks are divided into two types: road transport and rail transport storage tanks. Their capacities are 2-12m³ and 30-50m³, respectively. The characteristics of transporting fiberglass storage tanks are light weight and high strength, suitable for transporting various acids, alkalis, salts, and corrosive chemical products.
Fiberglass storage tanks mainly use mechanized winding molding technology, and hand lay-up molding has been basically eliminated. The capacity of factory-wound fiberglass storage tanks can reach 150m³; the diameter of on-site wound storage tanks can reach 15m, and the maximum capacity can reach 2500m³.
Corrosion Protection Structure of Fiberglass Storage Tanks
The inner layer uses alkali-free fiberglass felt, and the resin uses a resin with strong corrosion resistance to the medium, with a resin content of more than 90%, corrosion resistance, and a thickness of 2-3mm.
The anti-seepage layer is 3mm thick, using the same resin as the inner surface layer, with a resin content of 65%, which can not only play a role in anti-seepage but also serve as a reinforcing layer.
The reinforcing layer uses a resin with high temperature resistance and strength, and the resin content is only 35-40%, which is the only way to achieve sufficient strength.
The surface layer uses a resin with anti-aging and anti-corrosion functions, with a resin content of 90%, and is resistant to aging.
The anti-seepage layer, reinforcing layer, and surface layer must be completed at one time.
