Concrete cooling tower
Since the 1970s and 1980s, cooling towers have been used in Hubei Province, China, for forty years. Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) cooling towers have been dominant in the region due to their suitability for local climate conditions, especially the wet-bulb temperature. They are particularly common in residential and general industrial applications. However, in power plants, large chemical industries, and nuclear power stations, concrete hyperbolic natural draft cooling towers are also a proven cooling solution. Their ability to cool large volumes of water, coupled with a lifespan often exceeding 35 years, has earned them widespread customer acclaim.
Advantages of Concrete Cooling Towers
Concrete cooling towers boast a long history of global use. Since their invention, they've seen widespread adoption worldwide, particularly following the first Industrial Revolution. They are characterized by their large size, high construction cost, long lifespan, and capacity to cool large volumes of water. Concrete cooling towers utilize ceramic fill, which, while larger than PVC fill, offers advantages such as non-clogging and maintenance-free operation. They can cool fluids of any water quality, regardless of acidity, alkalinity, or particulate matter size. This is a key advantage over PVC fill, which has stringent water quality requirements.
It's worth noting that while slight tilting can affect the heat dissipation of PVC fill and FRP cooling towers, it has no impact on concrete cooling towers. Despite their large size, concrete cooling towers, due to their fan design, operate surprisingly quietly. However, a drawback is the significant plume of white vapor often seen at the top of concrete towers, similar to those depicted in classic images of nuclear power plants, which has a greater environmental impact compared to FRP cooling towers.
